Web application: Tool Dictionary

Loški Potok, a place with approximately 1500 inhabitants, is quite remote from larger centers. The population is aging, and young people, due to the lack of job opportunities, find employment in nearby and even more distant places. This greatly affects the changes and loss of the local dialectal speech. The goal was to create an application for a thematic dialectal dictionary where objects (tools), their components, and their usage are named in the local dialectal speech. Additionally, the aim was to breathe life into them by incorporating authentic stories from older local residents, which are connected to life in the past. This way, the intention is to preserve these aspects from disappearing and being lost over time.

The background

With the fast pace of life and widespread globalization, intangible heritage, such as the local dialectal speech, is rapidly changing and losing its traditional form. Since the lives of the local people have always been and partly still are closely connected to agriculture and forestry, the place retains a rich tangible heritage of objects from the past (collections of agricultural, forestry, and artisanal tools, and other old items), and along with them, the elderly residents also preserve the authentic Potok dialect. The local community is aware of the wealth and vulnerability of its heritage and would like to protect and preserve it as much as possible.
